I don't think that those involved in the casting process are paying that much attention. Felicia Day mentioned in a recent Wired article that she still can't get cast in things, even though The Guild is a runaway hit in its genre, with sponsorship by Xbox and Sprint.

Also, Amy Walker's big viral hit with the 21 Accents video has garnered over 3 Million hits, but she's still slogging out the funding of her independent film, hoping to get $1 donations from everyone, and she doesn't have Hollywood banging down her door.

That said, the performers who are using social media effectively are learning how to run a business, how to market their independent work, and will be that much further ahead when the eventual collapse of the studio/LORT system comes.

Interest is splintering. It happened to music first. It's happening to crafts and fine art now. Film and theatre are starting to see just the beginning of it.

Interesting. I wonder if the artists who make tangible "things" see the ROI a little more directly? On the other side of the coin, I wonder if directors/producers/other people who employ individual artists are even paying attention to those artists' social media efforts.

Devon, there's a ton of content here but I'll respond to one thing: how digital distribution is changing artists.

It's been my experience that there's a huge wave of empowerment rising for visual artists, craft artists, and those make 'things.' For theatre artists, especially individual performers, it seems to be especially slow in catching on. Where crafters are becoming hugely empowered, business savvy, and more connected, performers are still stuck in rigid casting systems that force them to think they don't have power.

Good call. "The delivery doesn't change the content." Unless I suppose the delivery *was* the content. On the other hand, the average person spends 15 minutes per day on YouTube; Hulu users watch something like 20 clips for every full length episode streamed. I do neither.

Packrati.us is a life saver, given the amount of content we're consuming :)

I would wager that you and I consume roughly equivalent amounts of content and while you create more we both create an above average amount. I think that changes how we view video on the web. In most cases I read faster than they can talk and the delivery doesn't change the message/content... but I would bet that there's a pretty direct correlation between volume of consumption/creation and response to video - bears more thinking on.

Also: I love Packrati.us.
